Santa Mesa Trolley
by Phantazein Studio
On the railroad tracks of Santa Mesa, Manila, makeshift trolleys can be found which take citizens to the opposite end of town for just a few pesos. Comprised of plank wood and casters, these trolleys are operated by a group of adolescent boys, the leader of whom reminds me of Rufio from the movie Hook. As soon as a train passes and the tracks are clear, the trolley is placed onto the tracks and the passengers jump on. The driver pushes the trolley by foot and the contraption moves surprisingly quickly. Depending on how far you go, you pass through spectacular views of the river and adjoining town which are especially beautiful at dusk. Once you get over how dangerous the whole situation is, it makes for an exhilarating ride.
